Somalian Pirates
At last, a global effort to fight piracy attacks in Somalia! A conference, attended by diplomats and shipping industry officials, was held recently in Dubai regarding the worsening crisis in Somalian waters. For years, seamen, shipowners and various governments have feared the pirates of Somalia. The conference seeks the prosecution and imprisonment of suspected pirates and financiers of such activities. Warships from the United States and other European and Asian nations now patrol the Somalian seas, particularly along shipping lanes leading to the Gulf of Alden. Furthermore, a trust fund was created by the United Nations aimed at fighting piracy and provide finacial support to Somalia to build its economy and create a stronger security forces to deter pirate attacks.
