Modernizing the Philippine Navy

The Philippine Government recently purchased from the United States a Weather High Endurance Cutter (WHEC) vessel which was turned over to the Philippine Navy last May 13, 2011 in Alameda, California. The maiden crew of the WHEC are in the Alameda US Coast Guard facility undergoing familiarization training onboard the vessel. They will sail her across the Pacific for the Philippines on August this year. The vessel will be the largest in the inventory of the Philippine Navy and will be deployed to patrol Philippine territorial waters and the Exclusive Economic Zone. The Cutter is armed with a 76mm gun mount controlled by an MK92 Fire Control System and was designed to undertake long range search and rescue operations, oceanographic research and law enforcement - defense operations. This form part of the series of acquisitions to modernize the current capabilities and assets of the Philippine Navy.
