Death Penalty as capital punishment in the Philippines was abolished by former President Gloria Arroyo (the second time after 1987). At present, issues of enforcing death penalty is arising as measure to control the escalating crime rate – are we in favor or not? If we are positive regarding said issue another concern will arise (it is a tool of oppression and executing innocent). Whether or not death penalty is enforced, the government specifically the lawmakers and enforcers must focus on the quality of our criminal justice system and the quality of how the laws are enforced.
Let me quote Zambales Rep. Mitos Magsaysay: “What the nation needs is the political will of national leaders, PNP, AFP, judiciary to implement the laws created, and to be vigilant up to the grassroots to do their respective mandates to create an atmosphere of safety for our citizens and show that if you commit a crime , you will definitely pay." Amen to that.
