On October 12, 2010, forty-four (44) Filipino fishermen arrived at the Glan Port in Sarangani province, Philippines, aboard an Indonesian commercial. These Filipino fishermen were arrested on different occasions by the Indonesian Navy while fishing in international waters that the Philippines and Indonesia claim as part of their territorial waters. Their release is said to be a gesture of goodwill by the Indonesian government considering that Glan has strengthened trade cooperation with the Northern provinces of Indonesia, especially North Sulawesi.
Unfortunately, the repatriates said there are still about 200 more Filipino fishermen languishing in Indonesian jails.
