MLC Convention

Lloyd's Register's Nordic Committee met last September 12 in London to discuss current issues and share information. Key topics discussed were the Maritime Labour Convention, control of greenhouse gas emissions from ships and implementation standards to drive improved environmental performance.Roland Ives, Lloyd's Register's Manager, Human Element & ILO issues told the assembled delegates that the new International Labour Organisation (ILO) Maritime Labour Convention, 2006 when it comes into force will address the causes of fatigue, occupational health and safety, recruitment and the working and living conditions for seafarers, with the potential for improving crew retention and motivation and the safety and status of shipping.

Our concern government agencies should actively participate on this kind of conventions for the benefit of our seafarers. We are going nowhere and we should move NOW!
