Piracy in Southern Philippines

Police authorities in Southern Philippines reported anew a case of ‘ambak pare’ or jump buddy. “Ambak Pare” refers to the fearsome phrase blurted out by pirates as they seize the engines of fishermen in the high seas off the coast of Kiamba, Saranggani Province. The modus of the pirates is to flag down fishing boats on their way out to the sea. At gunpoint, the pirates then order the fishermen to jump into the shark-infested sea as they steal the boat of its engine and other valuables. The pirates then flee, leaving behind the victims to fend off for themselves in the icy cold waters.

Sarangani Gov. Miguel Rene Dominguez said there is no immediate solution to the decades-old problem of sea piracy in the bay. He urged fisherfolks to arm themselves, instead. (http://asiancorrespondent.com/edwin-espejo/piracy-keeping-fisherfolks-at-bay)
