Seafarers' deaths mystery

French police are investigating the deaths of three seafarers onboard the Greek product tanker " Arionas".

Local sources said that police are not convinced that food poisoining was to blame, as has been suggested by some authorities.Doctors were assisting the inquiry into the deaths, at the time of writing.

The Marshall Islands-flagged tanker was sailing through the English Channel, laden with 27, 850 tonnes of fuel oit, when French coastguards received an emergency call from the captain.

The ship had a crew of 2o Russians and Filipinos. It was on voyage from Cyprus to Rotterdam, the French marine authority said.

Arionas is managed by Capital Ship Management of Piraeus and is currently in Le Havre, according to AIS.
